Cardinal Parolin: “There is no longer any respect for humanitarian law”

Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin expressed deep concern about the “systematic violation of international law,” especially the bombing of civilians and the killing of humanitarian workers. His remarks came on the sidelines of his participation in the Vatican Longevity Summit: Defying the Clock of Time, held today at the Augustinianum.

The Vatican’s Concern Over Escalating Violence

Cardinal Parolin emphasized that the Holy See is deeply concerned about the resurgence of conflicts in various parts of the world, particularly the recent wave of violence in the Gaza Strip, which Pope Francis condemned yesterday in his Angelus message.

The Israeli Embassy to the Holy See responded to the Pope today via its account on X, affirming that Israel was acting in accordance with international law.

Parolin noted that the Pope’s appeal “is a call to stop the violence and to find ways of dialogue and peace,” adding: “Recently, we spoke with the Red Cross, and they too are facing immense difficulties. The bombing of civilians, the killing of humanitarian workers—these are all actions that directly violate humanitarian law, and today, there is no respect for humanitarian law. This is one of the greatest challenges of our time.”
